- Marty R.
"I worked for QMx for six months in 2012 - Andy took a risk on me during a difficult time in my life, and although it didn't work out long term he stayed in touch for some time afterward. I will always remember his kind, supportive nature. I hope everyone at QMx is doing well."
- Ben
"He was always a very kind and thoughtful guy."
- Julian H.

- Millenio M.
"Miss you, Andy. Thanks for being a terrific mentor and friend."
- Mark R.
"Andy always treated me like family. He drove me home from work himself when I was sick. He introduced me to smoked salmon. He gave me all sorts of cool experiences that I won't ever forget. Andy, you are missed."
- Jill G.
"Andy gave me my first shot into publishing my designs. He was a true fan of the work he put out and I’m so grateful for the space he created in geekdome for others to get to create in. Rest easy Andy."
- Jeff H.
"Andy was responsible for giving me my start as a professional designer, and I’ll always be grateful to him. Rest in peace."

While drawing a line between work and life is important, you should also know that it can still be fun! After all, we did say “drawing” right? One of the most appealing parts of being a pop culture collector is showing off your collection and what better place and time to do so than in a work environment? Whatever your workspace, there’s always a place to fit in a little fandom to help a long day go by more quickly. For example, decorating your desk with your favorite Q-Figs and QMx plush is a great way to showcase your personality while also having the comfort of your very own “desk buddies” to keep you company. What’s more, having an awesome collectible or two (or more!) hanging around your workspace can totally help stimulate creativity.
One example of this is the interactive feature of our Zippermouth plush. Consider them as a sort of soft and cuddly fidget toy that you can play with while you’re mulling over an important email or prepping for a big presentation.
Keeping a Q-Fig Elite like Big Trouble in Little China’s Jack Burton on hand will ensure you never forget that “It’s all in the reflexes.”
And our Spider-Ham Q-Fig Diorama is a great reminder to take your lunch breaks!
Our Qreatures plush are designed to sit and stay like Howard the Duck here. Just make sure you let him know who’s boss or else he may try to commandeer your keyboard!
Maintaining a good work/life balance starts with setting up an ideal environment. While you want to maximize your efficiency and productivity, the most important thing to remember is to make time to focus on your mental health. Surrounding yourself with reminders of what makes you happy will help keep your stress levels low. Your workday will never be boring when you’ve got a gaggle of friendly and fun QMx collectibles by your side.
]]>Deb here, your friendly neighborhood Social Media Content Manager and self-proclaimed Star Trek n00b. In order to "boldly go where no one has gone before" you need the right vessel for the job. What is Star Trek without its ships to carry a daring crew across the galaxy and beyond? Star Trek Day is here, and in honor of this auspicious occasion, I've put together a countdown of my own personal favorite Star Trek ships from the last 56 years of this incredible franchise.
I had to start off with a classic. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701 is probably the first ship you think of when you hear Star Trek. Captained first by Robert April and then Christopher Pike, the USS Enterprise was transferred to Captain James T. Kirk in 2265, assigned to another five-year mission of deep space exploration. Its unmistakable iconic design is the work of the late Walter Matthew "Matt" Jeffries. And yes, he is also the namesake for the ubiquitous service ways known as Jeffries tubes.
Skipping ahead to a modern-day incarnation of Star Trek (presumably by taking "605 to South street"), the USS Cerritos is home to the crew of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. For any astute Southern Californians reading this, the reference to this city in the Los Angeles area is delightfully intentional. Captained by Carol Freeman, the USS Cerritos has already seen its share of adventures in the first two seasons of Lower Decks. I, for one, can't wait to see what's in store once I get my third season binge-watch on!
First designed by Nilo Rodis of Industrial Light & Magic, this ship made its debut in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Drawing inspiration from the Romulan Bird-of-Prey in the classic TOS episode "Balance of Terror", the Klingon version is also equipped with a cloaking device. Fun fact: the size of this ship is a highly controversial topic as it appears to change between its various appearances in Star Trek TV shows and movies.
Granted, DS9 is a space station but I'm including it in my list because hey -- I can! The setting for the 1993 series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, this space station includes a variety of facilities such as Quark's Bar, a Bajoran temple, and even a Klingon restaurant -- if "revenge is a dish best served cold" I can only wonder what's being served up there! Commanded by Captain Benjamin Sisko, Deep Space Nine serves as a hub for meeting, travel, and trade among a variety of characters in the Star Trek universe.
If you're wondering what could be so scary about a cube, then you haven't yet examined the depths of this massive and intimidating starship. Considered one of the most destructive weapons ever known, this ship was used by the Borg Collective to achieve their unilateral goal of total assimilation. I mean, if it has the audacity to capture Captain Jean-Luc Picard and assimilate him in "The Best of Both Worlds" (parts I and II), then you can be sure the Borg is not afraid of anything and the Borg Cube is a powerful reminder of this.
An Intrepid-class starship captained by Kathryn Janeway, the USS Voyager is one of the most storied ships in all of Starfleet. It is best known for having completed an unscheduled seven-year journey across the Delta Quadrant. It is also the first ship to be named "Voyager" in a long line of many that followed. Designed by Richard D. James and illustrator Rick Sternbach, most portrayals of the ship in the show were made with CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The Voyager's motto is: "For I dipt in to the future, far as human eye could see; Saw the vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be." a quote from the poem "Locksley Hall" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. As a literary nerd myself, I definitely appreciate that!
This 23rd-century Crossfield-class Federation starship was captained initially by Gabriel Lorca and later by Christopher Pike. Oh, and did I mention it time-traveled to the 32nd century? And let's not forget about the Spore Drive. The USS Discovery from the Discovery series (a prequel to TOS) along with its sister ship the USS Glenn is equipped with an experimental Spore Drive, an organic propulsion system that used mycelium spores to travel by "leaping" across the mycelial network in the mycelial plane. In fact, the USS Discovery was built to test this experimental drive. That's pretty mind-boggling to a newbie such as myself.
The prototype of her class and known as part of "The Great Experiment", the USS Excelsior was the first Starfleet vessel to feature a transwarp drive. Captained by Lawence H. Styles in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, this faster-than-light speed vessel was ordered to pursue the USS Enterprise which had been hijacked by Captain Kirk and crew to make a "brief detour" to the Genesis planet to retrieve the regenerated body of Spock and sync it back up to his katra (living spirit). Although the Enterprise was able to outrun the Excelsior, it is still remembered for being a powerful and technologically advanced ship.
This ship is particularly unique as it was created and operated by Starfleet in secret. It had no registry number or markings and was designed specifically for combat. Admiral Alexander Marcus was its first -- and only -- commanding officer. Oh, and did I mention this notable spacecraft was designed by Khan Noonien Singh?
Speaking of "Khaaaaaaaan!" I couldn't list my favorite Star Trek ships without mentioning this one from the classic feature film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The USS Reliant served as a research ship for Dr. Carol Marcus and Dr. David Marcus while they conducted research on the Project Genesis. It also ran afoul of one Khan Noonien Singh who ambushed its crew on Ceti Alpha V when the crew thought they had landed on Ceti Alpha VI. Commandeered by Khan, the Reliant battled the USS Enterprise in a final engagement in the Battle of the Mutara Nebula, during which Khan detonated the Genesis Device and we got to hear the classic line: "I have been and always shall be your friend".
Agree with my picks? Want to challenge any of them? Drop a line in the comments and share your thoughts. And, if you're looking to preorder any or all of our upcoming Qraftworks Puzzlefleet, click here!
Until next time,
Live Long and Prosper

]]>As a result of the logistical & personnel challenges caused by the outbreak, freight yards are extremely backlogged. If and when there are containers available, loading them is much more time consuming than before due to the lack of personnel available to work. The issues here are two-pronged: With both a personnel and container shortage, prices to book containers are skyrocketing. A 40 foot steel container in a month's time will cost over $10,000, a 547% increase over the seasonal average. This will affect everything imported to the USA. Please note that our upcoming summer shipments will experience a delay due to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 situation in Yantian, China.
Rest assured that we are analyzing the market very closely and are seeking many different alternatives to help ease the burdens everyone is facing. We have a number of partners that have benefited from moving products out of China and importing the products themselves. We strongly recommend this to all customers who have stock due to land this summer. If you have the means, contact us immediately to see what can be directly supplied to you. We suspect that prices should start to fall come August and will keep all partners informed of any updates.
Today, QMx is handing the reins of their blog over to us, the Zavvi team, so that we can talk about the classic animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. We are a leading online retailer that specializes in all things pop culture, including the latest collectibles. As such, it’s safe to say that we’ve watched the show a few dozen times — at least.
With a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender currently in the works over at Netflix, there’s never been a better time to look back at the original series.
The show began in 2005, running for a total of three seasons, and it remains a fan-favorite to this day. But what makes the show so popular? Well, stick around. We’re going to explain to you why Avatar: The Last Airbender is the best animated series of all time.
The World of Avatar
Brought to life by co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Avatar: The Last Airbender has some of the best world-building ever seen in fiction. The show draws inspiration from various aspects of East Asian culture, with its focal concept of “bending” the elements being based on aspects of Chinese martial arts.
Through this unique approach, the show distinguishes itself from other works of fantasy. The four nations — the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads — are all fascinating locations to visit. Thanks to Appa, a flying bison, we get to see all of these places up close over the course of 61 episodes (not including the sequel series, The Legend of Korra).
More Than a Kids’ Show
At first glance, it’s easy for those older viewers who are unfamiliar with Avatar: The Last Airbender to dismiss it as a kids’ show. However, if you are holding back on giving it a chance for this reason alone, you would be wise to keep an open mind.
Yes, the series focuses on younger characters. Yes, there are more than a few jokes one might consider silly. But that doesn’t stop the narrative from delving into some adult themes.
The subtext of Avatar: The Last Airbender goes far deeper than a man yelling about his cabbages (though we are thankful for the limitless memes), exploring real-world issues such as war and discrimination. You just have to look at the setup for the show to see how grounded the narrative really is — the Fire Nation is very much a proponent of imperialism, even going so far as to commit genocide against the Air Nomads for fear of the Avatar preventing their takeover of the other nations.
Throughout the show, audiences get to witness the effects of the Fire Nation’s invasion. There are some who rebel, some who pretend the war doesn’t exist, and others who actively spread violence. All of this serves to keep you invested in the world. To make you feel the terror of the Fire Nation and its ruler, Fire Lord Ozai.
Team Avatar
Of course, the show wouldn’t be what it is today without the core cast of characters: Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph. (We’ll talk about Zuko later on — don’t worry.)
The first season begins with Katara and Sokka, two members of the Southern Water Tribe, fishing in a small boat. Immediately, we get a sense for their personalities — Sokka is the comedic older brother, whereas Katara is the stern sister. This dynamic, though both of the characters do evolve over time, remains constant to the very end.
While fishing, the two siblings stumble upon Aang, the last of the Air Nomads. He is also the next incarnation of the Avatar, a spiritual being with the ability to master all four elements. For 100 years, he has been frozen inside an iceberg. When he finally returns, the first thing Aang wants to do is … go “penguin sledding.” Indeed, the arrow-headed airbender is a character who knows how to have fun. Nevertheless, it soon becomes clear that Aang is deeply afraid of his Avatar-hood and uses levity to hide his true feelings. It is this internal conflict that makes him such an interesting character to follow.
Skipping forward to the second season, we meet Toph. She is perhaps the most unique character in the show. Filling the archetypal role of the muscle, the Earth Kingdom girl is not at all what you would expect. When we first meet her, Toph appears to be a meek blind girl, but she quickly reveals herself to be a powerful earthbender — even going so far as to discover the art of metalbending.
Individually, these characters are all highly endearing. However, it’s when they’re together that they’re at their best. Their dynamic is unmatched, and their personalities bounce off each other in ways that make you want to keep tuning in.
The Villain’s Journey
Last but not least, we have to talk about Zuko. A banished prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko is the single most complex character in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Upon first introduction, he seems like your typical cartoon villain. He is on a mission to capture the Avatar so as to offer him to the Fire Lord, and he refuses to let anyone get in the way of his goal. However, with the guidance of Uncle Iroh, Zuko evolves into a far more nuanced individual.
Without going into major spoiler territory, Prince Zuko goes on a journey of self-discovery. While pursuing the Avatar, he begins to question his identity and his purpose in life.
The Show Goes On
The series concluded in 2008, but that hasn’t stopped fans from revisiting Team Avatar on a regular basis. Embark on your next adventure with QMx's Avatar: The Last Airbender collection, and head over to Zavvi US or Zavvi UK to see what we're all about at Zavvi.
During Spring Q-Con, we pulled back the curtain on several brand new Q-Figs currently in progress: Princess Jasmine, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Stitch from Disney; The Predator (featuring a cameo from Ah-nold himself); and the next Q-Figs in our line from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka and Katara. We also unboxed our new spring items live on camera, including Mortal Kombat, Airbender Q-Pals, Alien Q-Figs and the newest mutants from the X-Men. Not to be outdone, we were also able to give our fans an early look at the production prototypes from our Disney Afternoon Q-Fig series. Attendees were thrilled to see how Darkwing Duck, the Gargoyles and The Rocketeer turned out, and anticipation is running high for their release this summer.
But we didn’t just stop there. Not only did we showcase more new products, but we also included our Dealer’s Room as a fun way to score awesome deals from our key retail partners. We created a special landing page for attendees to shop around and score great deals on their favorite products. This will be an important part of Q-Con moving forward and we are continuing to find ways to improve the experience as we work to include more partner retailers like you.
As we approached the conclusion of Spring Q-Con, we reached the highlight of the event with an appearance by our CEO, Andy Gore. Joining us for a live chat, Andy gave us a look into his professional background, shared interesting facts about the history of the company, and provided his insights about the collectibles category. Fans were thrilled to ask questions and dialogue with Andy, as it’s not everyday you get to meet the CEO of your favorite company. It was a truly special moment and the cap on an amazing Q-Con weekend.
If you missed out on the opportunity to attend Q-Con, just click here to see our entire panel schedule and head on over to our Instagram TV where the sessions are archived. Stay tuned, because we will be hosting another Q-Con and Dealer’s Room this summer!

So what is a freight forwarder and why is important? “Essentially, a freight forwarder is a broker who books space on boats and containers. They have trucking partners domestically and in China. Their job is to get your product, get it on the boat, and make sure it sails,” elaborates Hansen. This is probably the one instance where a reference to a “middle man” isn't a bad thing. Freight forwarders handle tasks related to customs, coordinating trucks, and coordinating port landings. There is an overwhelming amount of execution that needs to take place but a freight forwarder allows a team to “not worry about those things and take it off of our shoulders” according to Fabian Reynoso, our QMx Warehouse Lead. With a good freight forwarder on your side, you are freed up to take care of other pertinent matters in your business.
With so many companies available, how does one find a good freight forwarder? One definitely needs to be choosy. “One week, a forwarder will be a thousand dollars cheaper. Then it flips the next week,” explains Hansen. It takes vigilance when acquiring fresh rates as costs can change rapidly. But don’t take this as a sign that cheaper is better. When it comes to a freight forwarder, you get what you pay for! “A lot of customers tend to go with the cheapest options. Often, this will get you bottom barrel customer service. Your products get damaged, lost, and end up costing you more money in the long run,” adds Reynoso. Customer service can be erratic with cheaper companies too. “Sometimes you will get updates or none at all for days. Make sure you find a freight forwarder who is on your side. If you need to pay an extra 200-300 dollars to ship out a product, it will be worth the extra cost with a company that offers better service.” We know many of us love to save as much money as possible, but skimping on a good freight forwarding will cost you dearly in the end.
Even the most seasoned veterans of the shipping world can still find challenges with freight forwarders. For Peter and Fabian, there were challenges they learned along the way that will hopefully help others navigate this complex world. “In our experience, customers think they know the terms used on a contract such as Ex Works or FOB. However, they often don’t know the exact meaning and run into issues determining who is responsible for paying what. This creates more paperwork to fill out down the line, so always make sure you know exactly what terms are being used and what they mean,” advises Hansen. “All the paperwork really keeps you on your toes. It has to be formatted a certain way. Even missing a little bit of information can cause a hold up in customs,” chimes Reynoso.
Your business simply can’t move forward without a reliable freight forwarder in tow. They are a company’s number one resource in moving stock from point A to point B. By wisely choosing a freight forwarder, you are helping ensure the success of your company. At QMx, our Operations team strives to guarantee our customers receive top notch service from us, and that we also choose forwarders who can ensure all products arrive safely and in a timely manner. We simply would not be able to receive our wonderful Q-Figs without them!
]]>First thing’s first: Make sure your product titles are optimized. Don’t include irrelevant information to try to “stuff” the title---it looks tacky, scammy, and ruins a customer’s ability to trust you. This is a common mistake for many users new to this platform. Instead, make it as relevant to the product as possible. This not only looks better but will also allow your listing to rank higher on Amazon. This will increase the likelihood that your product gains a buyer’s attention and will allow you to drive more sales.
An eye for detail is not only important when writing good titles, but also proves useful when looking for opportunities with ASIN’s where there is less competition. If you know of a product that has less than 50 reviews and you don’t see very many offers on the product, then you may have found an opportunity to get a headstart on selling that particular product. After all, it is far easier to make sales on an ASIN with 3 offers than it is with 30 other offers.
Lastly, although a customer may not always be right, good customer service is always helpful! Strive to offer a flexible and generous return policy and respond to all inquiries as soon as possible. Be proactive when asking for customer ratings because this plays a role in your rankings as well. Believe it or not, your actions and behavior on the platform matter in every sense of the word. Amazon looks at your response time, store ratings, and how fast you ship out products as one of many factors in your account health. So whatever involvement you have with customers, aim to be the best you can be.
As you can see, there are a number of ways sellers can win the Buy Box apart from just lowering the price of the product. Sellers can be myopic and only focus on price but success on Amazon requires so much more than that. Treat your selling account holistically by improving your seller performance, offering faster shipping options, asking for customer feedback, and selling at a competitive price when feasible. You are sure to grow leaps and bounds when you focus on being the best seller you can be.
]]>TikTok is a social media app that relies heavily on gimmicky videos, captions, and special effects. Although the main demographic is Gen Z, the demographic data is quickly diversifying. You can find an enormous array of interesting content on the app--- from challenges, to makeup, to finance, and geekdoms. There is more than likely a niche for everyone on the app.
With numerous opportunities for video marketing, this is an app retailers shouldn't ignore. According to Forbes, 86% of people want to see more videos from brands. People don't just want to see pictures of products---they like to see other people interacting with it in an interesting way. Many have caught on and are trying to meet this need. Brands are leveraging influencers showcasing things like unboxing videos and other gimmicky content to bring awareness to their brand.
Not only can TikTok help brands meet the demand for video-based content, but it can help companies save money! It is one of the most cost effective methods of clever advertising available to anyone. Advertising can cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to set up a campaign. But with TikTok, videos are free to make. A user has numerous widgets to choose from to make a video stand out. Because you don't need any other special equipment but your phone, this could be the most cost effective way for you to bring attention to your brand.
Lastly, this app can help you save time. Because it is so easy to connect TikTok to Instagram, any video you post on TikTok can be shared automatically on Instagram. You won't need to toggle from one app to the other but can create your content on TikTok knowing that Instagram will post your video. And because all the tools one needs to create a video campaign come straight from the app, there is no need to hop on to a computer and heavily edit your content.
Whether you’re a weekend warrior who sells at tradeshows, a collectible connoisseur with a panache for horror, or a retailer who specializes in all things sci-fi, there is a place for your fandom on TikTok. With so many fun tools like TikTok at one’s disposal, there are so many unique opportunities to grow your audience and hopefully glean some missing revenue in the process. Download the app if you haven’t. And make sure to have fun while you record your videos!
]]>Covid-19 has impacted many aspects of our business, and shipping costs are not immune. We are all in the same boat, figuratively and literally. Domestic shipping costs have almost doubled and the cost of importing products from China continues to creep up. We are also experiencing longer than normal delays in shipping. This is affecting everyone's margins from manufacturers to retail shops. How much longer can this possibly last? We understand that many feel frustrated by these changes. There are a host of reasons costs are climbing in ways we haven’t experienced before.
CNBC recently ran a story claiming that “an ‘aggressive’ fight over containers is causing shipping costs to rocket by 300%”. To put it in perspective, a container cost about $1,200 last March. Today, those costs have skyrocketed to roughly $6,000 per container. This is an astronomical rise in cost that affects everyone down the line.
“The reason for this is the Chinese are being so aggressive about trying to get empty containers back … that it’s hard to get a container for US exporters,” Mark Yeager wrote in an email to CNBC, adding that 3 out of 4 containers from the U.S. to Asia are “going back empty.”
To add to the additional burden that retailers now carry, FedEx suspended its Express operations and then resumed them again on March 1st with an additional Covid-19 surcharge. They are not alone in adding this charge. We have seen the same increases to shipping costs from UPS, DHL and all other freight companies.
We have also observed shipping delays that may be related to vessel activity and issues with fuel. In the wake of these challenges, some have opted to use discounted freight companies. But beware - because of these extremely low prices, the quality of the delivery often suffers. Remember the old saying “You get what you pay for?” This is 100% true in this case. Damages from these discount freight companies have increased, in part, because of the volume they have to deliver in such a short time.
Before you worry any further, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Because fees are dropping back down, we know that a return to normalcy is right around the corner. The inflated shipping costs that burden so many retailers will hopefully be coming to an end soon. As your partner, know that we are striving to ensure that all products are received in a timely manner in clean, undamaged boxes. Our goal is always to ensure the best possible experience for our retail partners.
]]>Part of our success as a manufacturer in the collectibles space is our ability to meet with our customers at the beginning of every year to reveal new product lines, advancements in technology, and new product concepts to give customers an exclusive glimpse of where we're heading (while also remembering where we’ve been). Trade shows and summits are where we have historically done that. Until Covid-19 and the global pandemic.
As a result, we leaned into our creativity and ingenuity that you love about the products we make and rose to the occasion. In 2020, we created Q-Con in order to bring a little normality to the collectors space and bring our fans nerdy content to fill the void of cancelled conventions worldwide. With Mark Robben, our Director of Marketing, at the helm, we created a brilliant way to have good fun with creative content and engaging panels.
With the success of both of our end consumer virtual Q-Con events in 2020, we heard from our retail partners that you wanted to be more involved in our Q-Con content. You, too, loved the virtual experiences we created. And we heard you. We adopted a similar model for our Q-Con Pro, an invitation only virtual summit where we shared exclusive content with our customers in the privacy of their own homes. But we didn't stop there. We took it to the next level by delving deeper into content that our own Specialty Retail Program publishes in every newsletter: Successes, challenges and how one can advance their business model to survive a changing and challenging marketplace.
We began our event with our product calendar and overview, and then hosted engaging panels on how to build an online presence with effective social media strategies, and even building out a Facebook and Instagram store in real-time. We delved into informative panels about key brand focuses for us in 2021, and also shared the encouraging success stories of Curtis Wilson from Pink a la Mode, and Cliff Lee from Lost4Toys. They not only have survived in this market, but have flourished! Lastly, we explored the world of operations, where we covered the basics of our shipping methods and explained the differences between EXW & FOB.
With the advent of these panels, we have been overwhelmed by questions and positive feedback from customers. Some missed our sessions due to other commitments but desperately wanted to attend. The need for our content was much greater than we imagined, as we tapped into something special --- partnering with our customers to ensure success in a changing marketplace. Needless to say, our first Q-Con Pro was a huge success!
We thank each and everyone of you who participated in Q-Con Pro as you played a huge role in the success of the event. We are ready to host another Q-Con Pro, so please fill out the survey we sent your way. Your feedback is helpful so we can continue to make this event a success. And be sure to attend Q-Con III on April 30 - May 2. As always, we are featuring special guests, panels, trivia, giveaways and more. Mark your calendars now!

In a time of bitter political division, gross economic inequality and clashes over sex, faith, race and ethnicity, The Federation makes us pause a beat and smile.
Formally known as the International Federation of Trekkers, Inc., the nonprofit organization based in Huron, Ohio, is the real-world version of the Federation seen in Star Trek. At the helm is Russ Haslage, who created The Federation with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry in 1984 to champion charitable causes and “make wondrous things happen,” to quote Gene himself.
“We need to embrace our differences,” says Russ. “This is what is going to make a bright future for humankind, free of poverty, hunger and hatred. We need to teach children tolerance. They are the key to our future.”
Chapters of the all-volunteer Federation are still doing great work, despite setbacks posed by the global Covid-19 pandemic. They continue to offer disaster relief and provide humanitarian assistance around the world. The Federation’s missions have, for example, fed the homeless, aided orphanages and saved shelter animals
The Federation powers ahead, fueled by donations, volunteer efforts and retail sales of Star Trek collectibles. Costumes, small ship replicas and tribbles sell well. Russ particularly likes the magnetic badge replicas from QMx. “They’re very popular,” he says. “They sell like crazy!”
Visitors can buy collectibles at the retail shop in The Federation’s new headquarters, which features a replica of the Star Trek bridge and pays homage to the Enterprise and the Discovery. Russ is working to restart online sales, which he put on hold last fall in order to relocate. He misses the pre-Covid days when he would set up at shows every month, recruiting members and selling merchandise.
But the absence of conventions has forced cutbacks. Says Russ, “We’ve been very careful. We don’t turn the heat up in the building as much as some would like. I’m changing the lights to LEDs to save on electricity. We got our first round of stimulus. It helped.” He’s also grateful to his landlord, who gave him two month’s worth of rent for free while he remodeled and moved.
A major highlight for Russ is Nichelle Nichols’ upcoming visit June 4-6, when the legendary actress who played Uhura on Star Trek: The Original Series will visit The Federation headquarters to say farewell before entering retirement. Fans are welcome to join in wishing her well.
A data analyst from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, Russ has proudly held the unpaid position as president of the International Federation of Trekkers for 37 years and is fully committed to promoting Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a better future.
“Star Trek is about all of these people with their different gifts, backgrounds and cultures coming together to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem,” says Russ. It’s his continuing mission to bring together fans of the Star Trek Universe to help those in need.
]]>Have you ever been mindlessly scrolling on Instagram and wondered why certain posts always seem to to be at the top of your feed? You can thank the Instagram algorithm for that! In past years, Instagram’s algorithm used to prioritize posts based on chronological order. Any posts on your feed consisted of the most recent content from those you followed. However, there have been drastic changes to the algorithm in recent years. The app now has more specific parameters it observes: user relationships, user behavior, interests, and relevancy.
If a particular user has spent time bookmarking or sharing posts, or scrolling through your stories, the algorithm interprets this activity as a strong relationship between the two of you. The old system used to look at the frequency of likes and comments on a single post. With Instagram’s current algorithm, it is far more important to have users not only like and comment, but also to have them bookmark, share, and click on your stories. Your content will more likely wind up on someone’s “explore” page with repeated engagement and action.
Instagram also weighs a user’s interests to gauge a relevancy score for posts. While determining the effectiveness of this is tricky, it is clear that Instagram will rank your feed based on how relevant it is to a particular user. Choosing accurate, effective hashtags is one way to attract users with similar interests. If a user likes to spend a lot of time searching for Instagram pages dedicated to food & drink, they may come across your content, ads, or reels if it is related to their interests. A good hashtag allows you to show up when a user types in a search query for that content. You want as many eyes on your content as possible, so finding ways to get a better relevancy score is key.
